A trip to Queenstown on New Zealand's South Island doesn't have to break your bank. Whilst you can easily spend hundreds of dollars on end jumping out of planes, off mountains or into rivers, there are still heaps of budget activities in Queenstown.
You can simply walk along the lakefront to take in the views (always budget friendly), but if you're after a day activity - there are heaps of day walks in Queenstown, but one of our favorites has to be the walk up Ben Lomond. It's about a 5-7 hours return, but it's worth every minute you spend walking.
The track leaves directly from the middle of town (or take the Skyline Gondola up if you're after a bit of a shortcut), and you'll feel like you're in a proper alpine environment when you get to the 1,748 metre summit. You have panoramic views of not only Queenstown and The Remarkables, but you can see as far as Mt Aspiring and Mt Earnslaw on a clear day.
