On February 22nd, 2011, Christchurch was hit by one of the most devastating earthquakes in New Zealand's history.
As a result of the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, much of the CBD was inaccessible to the public. The Re:Start Container Mall was built in an attempt to kickstart the local economy and offer a temporary space for retailers. The result is an innovative, vibrant and attractive space that has been a destination for not just locals wishing to do some high-street shopping, but also for tourists visiting the city.
Although still surrounded by the destruction left by the earthquakes, the Re:Start mall is a welcome respite for visitors and shows the Kiwi can-do spirit in a practical way.
