If you're planning a trip to New Zealand, the first thing you need to determine is how you'll get around. You essentially have three options:

1) Self Drive New Zealand Trip

This will leave you with the most flexibility in getting around New Zealand. Hiring a vehicle means you can go where you want and when you want (while driving on the left hand side of the road!). New Zealand is a small country, but it surprisingly takes quite awhile to travel around. Short distances between destinations still take longer than you'd think - roads are twisty and turny and nearly all of them are two-laned. 2) Hop on Hop off Bus

If you're not keen on driving yourself around New Zealand, no worries - there are lots of other great options. The first we suggest is a Hop on, Hop off bus pass. This gets you on a bus that travels around New Zealand on a set route. You can hop off, or hop on when and where you want. It's similar to a guided tour in that you have a guide that will show you and tell you about New Zealand, but you have the flexibility to hop off that tour when you want, stay a couple days and catch the next bus. 3) Small Group Tour

The final option you have for getting around New Zealand is a small group tour. These include accommodation, a guide, transportation, most meals and some activities.
